“Mth. Mok. a 13-year old boy residing in the Legogote area with three younger siblings. He and two of his siblings attend school at Mganduzweni Primary School where he is currently doing grade 6. Mth. and his siblings, together with their unemployed mum, live in a two-room brick house which they use as bedrooms, with a one-room shack nearby which they use as a kitchen.
Their mum has been in and out of hospital, and has left her work due to illness. Mth. and his younger siblings are all beneficiaries of the child support grant that is issued to all South African children under the age of 18. His younger siblings are 7-year old Cli., a three-year old boy, and a 16-month old baby sister. This family has been on the food parcel programme for the past two months, but will be removed to make space for more vulnerable families because they are now beneficiaries of the Department of Social Development child support grant.”
