“The Mas. family consists of three siblings: Man., aged 12 and the youngest, doing grade 6; 18-year old Ceb.; and their sister, 20-year old Khe., both doing grade 12 at Khanyisane Secondary School. They live in an RDP house (Government Built House) which usually consists of two bedrooms, with a living room and kitchen. They are orphaned and do not have any means of income other than Man.’s child support grant.
“According to Sarah, their care worker, the children are very well disciplined, regardless of their circumstances. They are responsible and take good care of themselves, including Man., and their house. They hardly miss a day at school unless is imperative to do so. They are very happy to be part of the food parcel programme because they can now have something to eat before going to school as well as when they come back from school.”
[Where possible, families collect their food from the main offices at K2, to save on transport costs.]
