“The Sib. family consists of nineteen family members. Sar. Sib. is 56 years old. She does not have an identity document. She lives with her seven children, who are between the ages of 20 and 26, and eleven grandchildren, between the ages of three months and 12 years. The family live in a three-room house.
“Apart from Sar., who does odd jobs in the community, washing clothes and other jobs, no one in the family works. Five of Sar.’s children have no identity documents and only four of the eleven grandchildren have birth certificates and receive social grants. The other seven grandchildren do not have birth certificates as their mothers also do not have identity documents.
“The family survives on payment for the odd jobs Sar. Sib. sometimes does and the social grants received by four of the grandchildren. The money is used to buy food and other basic needs. We gave the family a food parcel this month for them to have more to eat.”
