“Thank you for the commitment of the South African Government to tackle the incidence of HIV/AIDS and TB in recent years, with some success. Thank you, too, for eMasoyi’s contribution to the Test and Treat campaign. May all this work, and education, bring about cultural and behavioural change that improves people’s health prospects.”
- South Africa has the biggest HIV epidemic in the world, with 7.7 million people living with HIV. 60% of them will be co-infected with TB, the country’s leading cause of death.
- HIV prevalence among the general population is high at 20.4%.
- South Africa has the world’s largest antiretroviral treatment (ART) programme. This has been largely financed from its own domestic resources. Sadly, less than half of infected children are on this treatment.
